Get back to nature
Head over to Tiong Bahru Bakery Safari and get back to nature! What was once a nutmeg plantation that turned into military barracks is now a bakery surrounded by the gardens and urban farm surrounds of Open Farm Community. Rediscover nature with us in this historic part of Dempsey.

Minden Road history
Until 1860, Minden Road was part of what was known as Mount Harriet, a nutmeg estate. The nutmeg estate was owned by Colonial Treasurer William Willans and businessman Hoo Ah Kay. The estate was purchased for 25,000 Spanish dollars by the British authorities in 1860 for military use, and Minden Road became part of the British Military Area of Tanglin.
From 1872, it housed its first full battalion, the 80th Regiment of Foot – Staffordshire Volunteers. It later served as the general headquarters of the British Far East Land Forces.
In post-independence Singapore, the area came to be more popularly known as Tanglin Camp and housed the Ministry of Defence until it was moved to Bukit Gombak in 1989.

Singapore Safari by design
“This branch is all about celebrating the outdoors. Housed in a sturdy tent-like wooden edifice and furbished with vibrant colourful décor reminiscent of a safari, the concept was conceived after Chua’s trip to Botswana in Africa. In the 46-seater space, you’ll find rustic furniture collected from Chua’s travels, not forgetting polychromatic Kilim carpets made in Iran and Afganhistan. Probably the closest thing you can get to being in a real-life safari in Singapore.”
